Hello everybody! My name is John Blanchard with SALTA Direct Primary Care. I am a family physician here in Michigan. I am coming to you from the COVID camper. Today is April 5th and it is the thirteenth day in the camper.

When should I be concerned to go to the emergency room? If you are beginning to have worsening symptoms and shortness of breath you have got to be in touch with your primary care provider. If your primary care provider is not available give SALTA a call. We work around the clock to be sure you are healthy and being taken care of. It is important for your doctor to know your oxygen level and we recommend getting a pulse oximeter. If you don’t have one, contact your provider to have them check this. If their office is not open, give us a call! See how SALTA can take over your care and help manage and maintain your health to keep you from going into the emergency room. One thing that can happen with this virus is if someone is generally healthy the disease can be advanced in the lungs and the person can still look ok, but they are getting far along on the course of the problem. One of the only ways to know how you are doing is the pulse oximeter to see what the oxygen level is in the blood. One of the problems with this virus is someone can go from holding their own to crashing very quickly. So, as we are trying to keep people out of the emergency rooms and hospitals, we must be managing them safely at home. This means we may have to see you in the office. If you have someone at home and they have the virus and they are starting to have shortness of breath, be sure you have that connection with a physician so that you can safely manage that person at home.

I am extremely grateful for my wife. We have known each other for 30 years, we met when I was 20 and she was 18. She is a beautiful, intelligent, very strong woman that I love with all my heart. She holds me accountable to be the best husband that I can be, and I really appreciate her for that. We realized recently that this is the first time in over 30 years that we have been away from each other this long. It is difficult but I’ve come to really appreciate everything that she has done for me in my life and the times we spend together. I don’t think when we were still that young when we first met, we would be going through something like this together, but I am thankful she is in my life to go through this with.

I hope one positive thing that comes out of this is all of us in our marriages that we begin to appreciate our spouses. Sometimes we don’t appreciate them as much as we should and living in the COVID camper I have really come to appreciate my wife. I’ve been doing the shopping and cleaning the camper and all these things my wife fortunately has been able to do at home and helping take care of the kids, all the things that are so important. I realize how much time that takes, and I really appreciate it. I hope we realize unconditional love is true love. It is the kind of love we feel for our children, the love we feel for our parents. It is something that is previous and something that is rare and when you have that in a marriage it is something worth fighting for and something worth holding on to. Probably the most important thing in life is unconditional love between a husband and wife. This is one thing I am really coming to appreciate in life, and I hope everyone else will start to appreciate in theirs too.

I love being a direct primary care doctor because it allows me to spend more time with my patients.
This allows me to research their problems, understand their problems, and manage their problems. I think today’s health care system unfortunately because the provider does not have enough time with their patients, they turn to being just a place where referrals happen. So, I don’t know if you have ever had this experience, but you go to the primary care doctor and the next thing you know you’ve got to seen 3 or 4 other doctors. Certainly, referrals to sub-specialists are important for when they’re needed but I think too often specialty referrals are made too frequently and this is because primary care doctors in the traditional healthcare system do not have enough time to manage their patients and arrive at a diagnosis and a management in a larger degree then we are able to in direct primary care. We can manage primarily more of our patients and reduce unnecessary referrals to specialist up to 30%. Patients appreciate this too because this saves them time and money, especially if they have high deductible plans.
